1. Varun at 17 months old

We are going through several bouts of sickness. Fevers at 107F, cold, cough, rashes, ear infection (he got his first on Sep 6th). He is being a brave boy and is dealing with much grace and aplomb. The parents? Well, not so much :)

Now that we have it out of the way, let me focus on the positives for a bit.

He is learning and growing so much. He tries to imitate most of the ‘actions’. Whenever he is at our little altar at home, he folds his hands in respect. Also he pulls out his point finger to dip it in the kumkum dish and applies bottu. So adorable.

He can “wield” keys too. It is quite cute actualy. He actually takes out a (random) key from the key chain and tries to insert into a keyhole and jiggles! I know, my little baby can break in.

    And his vocabulary..oh my.

    1. “Oh-no”
    2. uh-oh
    3. mommy/mama
    4. dada
    5. nana —we don’t know what he uses this word for.
    6. no
    7. touch
    8. ba: this means bottle, bird, ball
    9. thap (stop) - means stop
    10. loun lound (round round) - anything that is moving in a circular motion, anything that is round in shape, fan, helicopter
    11. clow (cloud)
    12. cow/moo
    13. kooh (crow) and ka-ka
    14. baw baw (the sound a dog makes)
    15. imitating a roar sound (for lion)
    16. imitating with a hiss and a raised up palm (snake)
    17. bana/nanana/manana ==  banana
    18. boo/bloo = blueberries
    19. thatha = grandfather
    20. thaar (star) = he is a genius at figuring out star shapes no matter where they are

That’s all I can remember now.

Another thing that happened over the last month: he overcame his fear of swings.  Yay!

See you next month with another round up.

  2. A 21 day challenge

    Taken from here:

    http://hbr.org/2012/01/positive-intelligence/ar/1

Will try to answer to do the following for the next 21 days:

    • Jot down three things I am grateful for.
    • Write a positive message to someone in social support network.
    • Meditate at my desk for two minutes.
    • Exercise for 10 minutes.
    • Take two minutes to describe in a journal the most meaningful experience of the past 24 hours.

  3. Mother’s day trip to Bow-Edison, WA

For Mother’s day we decided to take a trip to the twin cities of Bow-Edison. I was reading this link on Seattle Magainze and instantly fell in love. The population is about 133. I know, really, reallly small town.

    Preparation:
I made some quinoa + moong dal for the kid. We took some milk in a flask and some snacks and toys for the road

    Food in Bow-Edison:
We followed the link (above) very strictly. Our first stop was to Tweets cafe to pick some lunch. We ordered 2 entries: Stuffed green peppers and Onion Pizza.

Our second stop was this sandwich place: Farm to Market Sandwiches. We browsed the place, but didn’t get anything as were too full from our lunch at Tweets.

After that we went to the Breadfarm and bought a bunch of bread and other treats.

    Other Activities:

    • the lucky dumpster

The place has a few quaint shops. The lucky dumpster caught our fancy and we stepped. It was a treat - every piece of junk you can imagine reincarnated into some form of art. Some photos below:

    •  PBST (Padilla Bay Shore Trail)

    Baby-friendly score:

None of the places had a changing table or a high chair.

Our solution to that was to carry his stroller and feed him in his stroller. About changing, we always change him in our car during such emergencies. So it was not a big deal at all.
